Fixed

It’s coming back to me slowly, which is also my current downhill speed on any technical stuff. The little changes needed to the bike and technique to get around in comfort and a bit more speed.
1. Raise the bars
Arms get a lot more pressure on them when you can’t stand and coast and also with the extra use of the brakes coming down. This should get better once the reverse muscles develop again and pedalling technique improves but for now I need the brakes.
Raising the bars will also mean lifting the front wheel is easier.
2. Skipping
No not with a rope but the back wheel to ensure the pedals are in the correct place so they don’t hit stuff. Not a massive problem generally but last night I discovered steps of a certain height are a bit dodgy when the crank sits on them.
3. Pedal tension
Popped my foot out of the SPD last night down Sleddale which is a fast (?) roughish downhill. Not a real problem at the time but it could be depending upon what’s coming up next so they need tightening a bit as it’s not desirable.
4. Spin class
Well I’m not going to one but being able to hit 150 rpm and hold it there is lacking. I need to free up my legs and should be getting up to 180+ rpm on smooth downhills for at least short periods. 160rpm max so far.
5. Bunny Hopping
I never learned to hop a fixed previously preferring the very effective plough through obstacles strategy but I need to this time around. See bar height above. It goes something like lift front end and then stop pedalling which will fire the back in the air too.

At least my thigh muscles aren’t screaming at me for days like the first ride.

Stupifying the Simple

The Simple has now gone from kinda sensible to utterly daft.

Can I regain my title from 2006?

Stupified Simple

First shakedown ride suggests I’m going to need to work on the required muscles and the necessary downhill skills. A LOT.

2011

Well we’ve slipped into 2012 in a haze of illness, headaches, runny noses, lack of sleep, weightloss, bad back and no riding over the holidays.

Still the legs will be fresh when I get on a bike. Right?

2011 in Numbers

117 rides

944.53 miles

37430m climbed

156.58 hours out on a bike

121.84 hours moving on a bike

100% more cyclo cross races

Plenty of solo night rides due to the arrival of No 1 son.

1 new bike.

Generally feeling better than last year but lacking power and endurance still which is no real suprise.

So to 2012 what to do…

Riding the viral wave

A couple of well connected friends who pinged this photo around the Twitter world when I added a new comment and it went a bit viral.

Going Viral

Add to that the 5000+ views on STW and it got a bit out of hand for a 6 year old photo.

Still it’ll never happen to anything else I’ve taken.

Bizzarely it’s still only 6th in my most “interesting” photos on Flickr and this is still the undisputed No1.
Throw the roll
No contest really ;0)

This is where I say…

… I told you so.

Future World Champion?

5 world champions beaten. Current World Cup champion and champion elect beaten. That was some run, not that I’ve seen it yet as I had to make do with the live timing.

I was expecting him to take the Junior title a couple of years ago but it wasn’t to be on a very pedally course. I certainly didn’t expect him to be senior champion before he was 20.

Congrats Dan. World Downhill Champion. Cherish those rainbow stripes.
